*STAR* has cancelled its annual golf tournament scheduled for Monday, October 12th. Greene Hills Club has cancelled all non-member events because of the pandemic. A letter to that effect has been sent to previous sponsors and players and also asks for a donation.
The annual golf tournament is *STAR*’s only fundraising event of the year. All proceeds support *STAR*’s on-going efforts working with the Town of Stanardsville to restore economic vitality to the historic county seat.

The Town of Stanardsville was awarded a $1 million Downtown Revitalization grant on September 2, 2016 by the Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD). The funds will be used for façade improvements on several commercial buildings on Main Street; housing rehab projects on Ford Avenue; blight removal; and construction of a Performance Pavilion / Town Market structure near the County Administration building on the west side of town.
Stanardsville submitted a grant request in March totaling $996,790 under the highly competitive Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program. Only 10 other localities in Virginia were awarded CDBG funds this year, and most of those were counties.
*STAR* was instrumental in development of the grant proposal and, working with the town, will manage implementation of the various grant projects going forward.
A Management Team of key stakeholders, including Mayor Gary Lowe, Supervisor Bill Martin, County Economic Development Director Alan Yost, *STAR* President Don Pamenter, as well as business owners, property owners, students, and town residents, have been meeting monthly to develop and implement proposals for revitalizing the downtown area. Several meetings and public hearings were also held early on in the process to consider input from members of the community. Presentations on the proposed project activities were made before the County Board of Supervisors and the Stanardsville Town Council, and Mayor Lowe has given periodic updates on construction of the facade improvements, apartment upgrades and pavilion projects.
The grant proposal also included a detailed Economic Restructuring Plan for Stanardsville. Here is a news story about the grant in the September 8, 2016 issue of the Greene County Record Town awarded $1 million dollar grant
Stanardsville has been awarded up to $35,000 in Planning Grant funds by the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) to prepare a comprehensive Business District Revitalization grant due in March, 2016. DHCD notified Mayor Gary Lowe in October that the data and surveys submitted by the Town, as required, “demonstrated an acceptable preliminary level of interest and need in developing plans for the proposed project.” The $35,000 it is making available to the Town is for “developing solutions to the identified needs” to help revive the downtown business district. Next step is a Planning Strategy meeting, led by a DHCD facilitator, with Stanardsville’s Management Team to develop a work plan on the activities that need to be accomplished and by when. That meeting will take place on November 19. Click here for press release. (pdf)
